2 Nephi Chapter 13 Verse 1
Original Chapter 8. Comprising chapters 11 to 15 inclusive.
Excerpts from the Book of Isaiah. Comprising Chapters 12 to 15 inclusive. Compare Isaiah 2-5.
For behold, the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem, and from Judah, the stay and the staff, the whole staff of bread, and the whole stay of water--

The words “Stay” and “Staff” in the original Hebrew of Isaiah 3 are the masculine and feminine forms of the same same word, Mish’en (masculine) and Mish’enah (feminine), which both mean “support.” The King James translators appear to have consistently translated the masculine as “stay” and the feminine as “staff.” In the King James version, it says “the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water” because in the original Hebrew, both words are in the masculine form. The Book of Mormon rendition, however, says “The whole staff of bread, and the whole stay of water.” This rendition preserves the parallelism, but breaks with the gender translation consistency. Of course, there is the possibility that in the text from which Nephi was reading, the word used with bread was feminine. Perhaps if we look in the Great Isaiah Scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls, we will see a difference?
